How Does Tooth Decay Happen?
The tooth decay process typically starts when plaque (which is a sticky combination of bacteria, food, and debris) builds up on the teeth. While bacteria live in everyone’s mouth, it is truly happy when plaque is present. When tooth decay is caught early, it typically has not broken through the enamel, which means Dr. Naik can simply apply a sealant on the molars to prevent the decay from getting worse. However, in the event the enamel has been compromised, Dr. Naik will have the fill the tooth. In extreme cases, root canal therapy may be required.
Furthermore, when acid is produced frequently, it can dissolve the enamel structure of the tooth and even eat through the underlying dentin layer until the bacteria reaches the pulp (nerve). If left untreated, this level of tooth decay could result in root infection and even loss of tooth. Here are a few signs of tooth decay/cavity to keep an eye out for:
- Sensitivity when brushing, too hot or cold goods, or when breathing in air
- Pain in the tooth
- Initially, you may see a small white spot on the tooth, which will turn brown over time
- As the decay process worsens, a hole in the tooth may form
